How to reduce the costs of motoring

Updated 18 September 2025

Running a car can be expensive, but there are plenty of simple steps you can take to cut your motoring bills. From adjusting your driving style to making smarter financial choices, here are some of the most effective ways to save money on the road.

1. Save on Fuel

Fuel is often the biggest day-to-day cost of driving. While you can’t control prices, you can cut down on how much you use.

Choose your vehicle carefully
Pick a car with strong fuel efficiency. Generally, over 30 MPG in urban driving and 45–50 MPG on longer runs is considered good.

Drive smoothly
Small changes in your driving style can save hundreds of pounds a year:

  • Accelerate gently and avoid hard braking.

  • Maintain a steady speed where possible.

  • Anticipate traffic by slowing early.

  • Drive in the correct gear to reduce strain and fuel use.

Cars are least efficient when cold. Driving hard straight after start-up wastes fuel and increases engine wear.

Air conditioning
Air con can increase fuel use by as much as 20%. At low speeds, open the windows instead.

Tyre pressure
Check tyres at least every two weeks. A drop of just 0.4 bar (6 psi) can increase fuel consumption by up to 20%.

Weight
Remove unnecessary items from your car. Roof bars add 3–5 kg and increase drag, which can raise fuel use by around 10%.

Shop around for fuel
Know which stations offer the best prices along your regular routes. Supermarket schemes and loyalty cards can also deliver extra savings.

2. Save on Insurance

Insurance premiums can vary dramatically, so shopping around is key:

  • Pay annually, not monthly.

  • Compare quotes every year at renewal.

  • Add an experienced driver if you’re young or new to driving.

  • Use a telematics (black box) policy if you’re a careful driver.

  • Give accurate mileage estimates to avoid overpaying.

3. Save on Maintenance

Skipping services may appear to save money, but often leads to bigger bills later. Regular servicing keeps your car reliable and fuel-efficient.
Check tyres, oil and brake fluid often to prevent costly repairs.

4. Consider Leasing Instead of Buying

With more than 90% of new cars in the UK bought on finance, leasing continues to be a popular choice. Benefits include:

  • Fixed monthly costs.

  • No worries about depreciation.

  • Easy access to a new car at the end of your lease.

Lease payments often work out lower than traditional finance repayments.

5. Public Transport and Car Sharing

Cutting occasional car use can save money overall. Options include:

  • Using public transport where it’s convenient.

  • Cycling for short local journeys.

  • Car Pooling can help reduce fuel and parking costs.

Even reducing driving once or twice a week adds up across the year.

6. Use Technology to Save Money

There are plenty of apps available to save you money while driving:

  • Fuel comparison apps like PetrolPrices show nearby stations with the lowest rates.

  • Parking apps highlight cheaper car parks and provide discounts.

  • Eco-driving apps give tips on smoother, more efficient driving.

7. EVs and Low-Emission Zones

Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and Clean Air Zones are expanding across UK cities. If you drive into them regularly, switching to a hybrid or electric vehicle could save money on charges, as well as road tax and running costs. Leasing can make EVs more affordable with fixed monthly payments.

8. Plan Your Journeys

Combining errands into one trip saves time and fuel. Use sat nav or traffic apps to avoid heavy congestion and stop-start driving. Planning ahead can often save dozens of miles over the course of a month.

9. Breakdown Cover and Warranties

A breakdown without cover can leave you facing hundreds in recovery costs. Shop around for affordable breakdown memberships, or compare whether adding cover to your insurance is cheaper. Extended warranties can also be worthwhile for older cars, helping avoid major repair bills.

10. Save on Parking

Parking can quickly eat into your budget. Avoid defaulting to the nearest car park by:

  • Using apps like Parkopedia.

  • Parking slightly out of town and using Park and Ride services.

11. Wash Your Car Yourself

Professional washes can cost £6 or more. If you wash every fortnight, that’s over £150 annually. Doing it yourself at home is far cheaper.

12. Buy Road Tax Annually

Vehicle Excise Duty usually costs less if paid annually instead of monthly instalments. For example, a Band D vehicle costs £115 annually, but £120.75 if paid in 12 parts. Paying in one go avoids the extra cost.
