Breakdown Cover Explained

Breakdown Cover

Updated 22 September 2025

Breakdown cover can be a lifesaver if your car stops working. Having the right policy in place saves you from the stress, expense, and inconvenience of being stranded on the road.

What is Breakdown Cover?

Breakdown cover is a type of insurance that helps if your car suffers a fault. It means you’ll have access to a trained mechanic who can:

  • Investigate the issue

  • Attempt to fix your vehicle on the spot

  • Tow your car to a nearby garage if roadside repairs aren’t possible

This gives you peace of mind that no matter where a breakdown occurs, help is only a phone call away.

Types of Breakdown Cover

There are two main types of policies:

  • Vehicle cover – Protects the specific car listed on the policy. Only that vehicle is covered, no matter who is driving.

  • Personal cover – Covers you as an individual. You’ll be protected whether you are driving your own car or travelling as a passenger in someone else’s vehicle.

Levels of Breakdown Service

Breakdown policies are available at different service levels, so you can choose the right one for your needs.

Roadside Assistance

If your car breaks down while you’re driving, a mechanic will come out and try to repair it at the roadside. If it can’t be fixed, your car will be taken to the nearest garage.

Home Start

If your vehicle won’t start at your home address, a mechanic will come to help. This is especially useful if you have battery problems or don’t regularly use your car.

National Assistance

If your car cannot be fixed locally, this service will transport you, your passengers, and your vehicle to any destination in the UK.

European Cover

Provides the same roadside assistance benefits while travelling in mainland Europe. An essential option if you plan on driving abroad.

Added Peace of Mind with CVS

At Compass Vehicle Services (CVS), many of our lease vehicles come with manufacturer breakdown cover for the first three years as standard. That means if you experience any problems, you’ll have full support, whether at home or on the road.
