Kia EV9 GT: A High-Performance Seven-Seater
Published 25 November 2024
Kia is setting new standards with the EV9 GT, its flagship all-electric seven-seater SUV. Unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, this high-performance model offers an impressive mix of speed, comfort, and cutting-edge technology.
Power and Performance
The EV9 GT is powered by a dual-motor setup that delivers a staggering 501bhp. The front motor produces 215bhp, while the rear contributes 362bhp, resulting in a 0-60mph sprint of just 4.3 seconds. This performance outpaces rivals like the Land Rover Defender 130 V8 and is only slightly behind the Audi SQ7’s 4.1 seconds.
Adding to the excitement is Kia’s Virtual Gear Shifts (VGS) technology, which mimics the feel of a traditional gearbox. Drivers can use paddles behind the steering wheel to manually shift gears, enhancing engagement. To complement this feature, the system replicates the sound of gear changes, offering an immersive driving experience.
Handling and Driving Dynamics
Kia has equipped the EV9 GT with cutting-edge technology to ensure it handles as impressively as it accelerates. An electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD) improves cornering by directing power to the wheels with the most grip, while adaptive dampers, a first for Kia SUVs, adjust the suspension based on driving conditions.
To match its power, the EV9 GT features upgraded brakes and 21-inch alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance tyres, ensuring stability and control at high speeds.
Battery and Charging
The EV9 GT retains the 99.8kWh battery from standard models, supported by Kia’s advanced 800V architecture. This allows ultra-fast charging, with the battery reaching 10-80% capacity in just 25 minutes using a DC fast charger.
While official range figures are yet to be confirmed, the EV9 GT is expected to deliver just under 300 miles on a full charge—suitable for both daily commutes and longer journeys.
Interior and Style
The EV9 GT’s interior blends sportiness and luxury. Neon-green accents on the steering wheel and seats add a bold touch. Sports seats, covered in Alcantara, combine comfort with style. Ambient lighting, customisable to match the green details, creates a futuristic vibe.
Outside, bold design features set the GT apart. Including acid-green brake callipers, bespoke air flaps, and redesigned bumpers.
A Family-Friendly Powerhouse
Despite its performance focus, the EV9 GT remains a practical family car. Its spacious seven-seat layout and advanced safety features make it ideal for larger households. The adaptive driving modes allow it to transition seamlessly from a comfortable cruiser to a performance-oriented SUV.
Competing with Rivals
The EV9 GT takes on competitors like the Tesla Model X, Volvo EX90, and Audi SQ7. While the Tesla Model X Plaid offers unmatched acceleration, its lack of right-hand-drive availability in the UK limits its appeal. The Volvo EX90 prioritises luxury and range but can’t match the EV9 GT’s performance. Meanwhile, the Audi SQ7 offers comparable speed but lacks the EV9’s futuristic features.
Pricing and Arrival
The EV9 GT is expected in the UK in mid-2025, with prices starting around £85,000. This places it among rivals like the Volvo EX90 and Audi SQ7, offering a strong mix of power, luxury, and practicality.
