There are four main types of card you can use to make buying fuel easier and potentially cheaper:
-
Fuel loyalty cards
-
Supermarket loyalty cards
-
Cashback credit cards
-
Business fuel cards
Fuel Loyalty Cards
Esso
- Esso doesn’t have its own loyalty scheme but has partnerships with Nectar and Tesco Clubcard.
- Nectar: Collect points when you fill up at participating Esso stations. Redeem for a discount of 5p per litre or spend at partners like Sainsbury’s, Argos, and eBay.
- Tesco Clubcard: Collect Clubcard points at Esso stations with a Tesco Express shop, then redeem them for fuel or other Tesco rewards.
BP – BPme
-
BPme is BP’s loyalty scheme.
-
Earn 1 point per litre, or 2 points per litre on BP Ultimate fuels, plus points on in-store and car wash purchases.
-
Redeem points on fuel, instore purchases, or via the BP rewards catalogue.
Shell – Shell Go+
Shell Go+ replaced Drivers’ Club and is now well-established.
-
Instead of points, you earn a “visit” each time you spend at least £10 on fuel or £2 in-store. Every 10 visits unlocks a reward.
-
Benefits include 10% off hot drinks and deli2go food, 10% off Shell car washes and lubricants, and £3 reward for every 300 litres of V-Power fuel purchased.

Texaco – Star Rewards
-
Earn 1 point for every litre of fuel (worth 1p).
-
200 bonus points when you register.
-
Redeem from 500 points onwards on fuel, Love2Shop vouchers (M&S, Argos and more), or make a matched charitable donation from Texaco.
Supermarket Loyalty Cards
Supermarkets do not offer dedicated fuel loyalty cards. Instead, they include fuel points as part of their loyalty card schemes.

Tesco Clubcard
-
Earn 1 point per £2 on fuel spend at Tesco filling stations.
-
At Esso with Tesco Express sites, earn 1 point per £3 on fuel and 1 point per £1 in-store.
-
Points convert quarterly into vouchers, which can be used on fuel, shopping, or boosted with Tesco Clubcard partners.

Sainsburys + Nectar Card
-
Collect 1 Nectar point per litre at Sainsbury’s petrol stations, plus 1 point per £1 on other shopping.
-
Redeem points in 500-point (£2.50) blocks.
-
Nectar partnerships let you use points with hundreds of retailers or swap for 5p off per litre of fuel.

Asda Rewards
-
Asda Rewards is now fully rolled out nationwide.
-
Customers collect “cashpot” savings by scanning the app when shopping or fuelling. Selected fuel and in-store promotions will boost your balance.
-
Cashpot balance can be converted into vouchers for fuel or shopping.

MyMorrisons
-
My Morrisons has replaced the old More Card.
-
No more points system – instead, savings are instant offers or personalised discounts through the app or card, including fuel purchase promos when available.
Cash Back Credit Cards
Cashback Credit Cards, helping you save money on your petrol and diesel.
There are plenty of credit cards that offer cashback so it is worth having a look around to find the right one for you.
Obviously paying for petrol, or indeed anything else, on a cashback credit card will earn you something back, but the trick is to make sure it is worth your while.
- Rates and offers vary by card provider – the key is to find one where the cashback outweighs any fees and interest charges.
-
Best buys change regularly, so checking financial comparison sites before applying is essential.
Fuel Cards for Business Customers
Company fuel cards remain popular, helping businesses control spending, reduce admin, and sometimes access lower fuel prices.
Benefits:
-
No interest (unlike a credit card).
-
Cards can be assigned to drivers or vehicles with spend limits.
-
Detailed reporting and account control.
-
Option to allow fuel-only use or include extras like car wash/oil.
