Check if Your Car Is Insured: The Motor Insurance Database (MID)

Updated 25 September 2025
The Motor Insurance Database (MID) is the central record of all insured vehicles in the UK, maintained by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB). It is funded through compulsory contributions made by UK insurers and is the main resource used by the police and DVLA to enforce motor insurance laws.
Using the MID online tool, you can quickly confirm whether your car is insured. The database is free to check, secure, and does not reveal any personal policy details. It will only confirm if a vehicle is recorded as insured or not.
When and Why You Should Use the MID
- To confirm that your own car is correctly listed as insured.
- To avoid penalties for driving without valid insurance, which can include fines, points on your licence, or vehicle seizure.
- To check your insurance has been properly updated after switching providers.
If you need to check another vehicle following an accident, the MID provides a separate, paid enquiry tool for this specific purpose.
How to Check if Your Car Is Insured
The process is simple and takes less than a minute:
- Go to the askMID website
- Enter your vehicle registration number
- Tick the box to confirm you have read the terms and data protection notice
- Complete the CAPTCHA security check
- Click the green ‘Check This Vehicle’ button
The service will then confirm whether the registration you entered is shown on the database as insured.
What the Results Mean
- Vehicle is shown as insured – this confirms your car has valid cover and is correctly recorded.
- Vehicle not found as insured – this may mean your insurance hasn’t been registered yet, has expired, or was not set up correctly. In this case, contact your insurer immediately to resolve the issue.
Stay Legal and Protected
By law, every vehicle kept or used on UK roads must be insured, unless you have declared it off-road using a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). If your car is uninsured and not declared SORN, you risk fines, penalty points, and possible prosecution.
The askMID tool gives you peace of mind: a quick check helps ensure your insurance is valid and you remain road legal.
