Ford Transit Van Review 2017
When you think of vans, the first one to spring to mind is probably the Ford Transit. It’s almost the icon of commercial vehicles. The biggest van in Ford’s range, it’s powerful, reliable and tough enough to deal with anything.
If you regularly need to move large amounts of equipment, you’ll struggle to better the versatility of this full-size van. You have a choice of two wheelbases, three body lengths and three roof heights. The most spacious combination will provide a huge load area of 487.3 cubic feet.
It comes with a variety of configurations and powerful, fuel-efficient engines. So, combined with its easy-going drive, the Transit is a great van for a commercial business.
Trims and features
The full size 2017 Ford Transit Van comes in long-wheelbase and standard models. You can also choose from high, medium or low-roof options. Furthermore, there’s an option of a longer length vehicle body on the longer-wheelbase.
You get a great array of standard equipment with the Transit Van. The highlights include a rear-view camera, a steering wheel you can angle and retract, remote locking, front air-conditioning, stereo and a well-lit load area.
You can also opt for a variety of extras. These include different axle ratios, twin rear sliding doors, longer exterior mirrors, power-retractable running boards, rear parking sensors, cruise control and a lane departure safety alert system. There’s also remote engine start and rear air-conditioning. You can even opt for voice controls that comes with a 4-inch display. Or there is the Sync 3 infotainment option with touchscreen, navigation and satellite radio.
Ford transit van review on performance
The base engine is a more than adequate 3.7-litre V6, giving 275 horsepower. All models have rear-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Upgrades include a turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 and 3.2-litre, five-cylinder diesel. Volume capacities vary from model to model. They can range from 2,740 pounds to 4,560 pounds for payload and from 2,900 pounds to 7,500 pounds for towing.
The 2017 Ford Transit Van’s centre console’s tall design and easy to reach gear changer and accessible climate and audio controls, let you keep focused on the road for a smooth, safe drive.
With the doors shut, the extended-length 2017 Transit on the 148-inch wheelbase can take 14-foot lengths of materials. The shortest version on the standard wheelbase carries up to 10 feet in length.
Driving the ford transit van
No other truck-based van can better the 2017 Ford Transit Van for road handling. Wind and road noise is kept in check, providing a quieter cabin than you’d expect for a full-size van. The standard 3.7-liter V6 offers decent power but those regularly transporting a heavy load may find it rather lacking. But the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 is very different and has no problem powering a Transit carrying a full load. The 3.2-liter diesel is surprisingly quiet and does have some oomph to it, but not quite to the level of the 3.5-liter V6.
