Instagram Car Lease Scam

It’s come to our attention that there is a growing problem with fraudulent companies scamming people on social media and Instagram in particular.
In fact one such Instagram account has come to our attention recently – /lease_carleaseuk/. They are taking people’s money but not providing the lease car.
Once /lease_carleaseuk/ have persuaded people to part with their money for the deposit they are directing people to CVS Ltd to arrange delivery of their car.
Of course this is when the customer realises they have been scammed, and how we became aware of this particular fraud.
CVS Ltd are in no way affiliated with /lease_carleaseuk/ and have reported them to the Police.
Gerry Keaney, chief executive of the BVRLA (British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association), said: “These criminals are purposely targeting the vulnerable, scamming money from people who can least afford to lose it. It’s deplorable. Their adverts can appear very convincing with some even posing as BVRLA members and citing membership numbers of legitimate members.”
Guarding yourself against the scam
The following should be considered red flags:
- You have to DM to enquire to get the deal
- No credit or affordability checks
- Car Lease is Guaranteed
All genuine Car Leasing Companies and Brokers are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The regulations require checks to ensure you can afford to lease the car.
If you are asked to hand over money and these checks have not been carried out it should be a big warning sign that this is a scam.
If you’ve been targeted by a car leasing scam, report it the Police’s Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.Back to all help and advice articles
